3 Clever Tactics To Build Your Confidence In Public Speaking

I want to ask you a question; do you have a favorite speaker? Someone you admire and look up to? I am sure you have one in mind whether it’s a famed celebrity delivering a speech at the Oscars, a politician authoritatively declaring his plans for the country or even a pastor whose sermon can drive you to tears because he delivers it with such strong conviction. What do you notice about them? What do these speakers have in common? One thing I can assure you is all of them are confident and relaxed on stage.

You are wondering; can that happen to me? The answer is YES. However, confidence on stage does not happen overnight. It takes practice and knowing the fundamentals to effective speaking that will help build it up.

As you prepare for an upcoming speech, I encourage you to apply these three clever tactics that will help build your confidence in public speaking.

1. Know Your Audience
Before you draft your content, you should prioritise knowing your audience. Know who they are, their pains, their needs, and their interests. When you know what they need to hear, you can then construct your content in a way that will resonate with them. As a result, you’ll get nods; smiles and faces filled with hope because you know you’ve addressed their needs.

2. It is Not All About Content
If you are too focused on facts and figures, you’ll lose sight of what really matters to your audience. All too often, speakers make the most basic mistake when delivering a speech: the belief that having a carefully researched and a grammar-free content is what captures the hearts of their audience. While it is true that making your speech flawless in terms of grammar and making sure you are stating validated facts are necessary, it’s not the reason why your audience would want to connect with you, it’s how you deliver your speech that matters. Show some emotions, share real-life stories that they can relate to, you can even share your own personal journey – the rawness of your speech is what moves them and that is what you should aim for.

3. Just Breathe
If there is one thing I know, it is the fact that you cannot be confident if you’re not relaxed.
Nervousness and tension can easily extinguish confidence, and mind you, your audience can
sense it. My advice? To feel relaxed, you need to learn how to do diaphragmatic breathing. This
type of breathing allows more oxygen to get to your brain and your heart. The more relaxed you
are, the more in control you will feel and thereby leading to confidence.
